The red and blue plaid shirt lay crumpled at the foot of the bed. It had been discarded after a particularly backbreaking day in the mines.
She refused to call them ‘stuffed’, or ‘toys’, because if she said those words aloud they would be in danger of coming true. She chose instead to ignore those nuances and to perpetuate her childhood belief that they had feelings. To her, they were just animals. They had their own lives and stories, and she knew them all by name.
She didn’t have the stamina for a novel, the focus for a short story, the drive for an essay, or the patience for a poem. So she settled on fragments of untold stories.
